the IT list #10

“the IT list” A series of posts that highlight the various stuff, old or new, that I’ve been doing… reading, watching, eating or simply obsessing over recently. It’s my personal countdown.

the IT list #10

I never intended to buy a Kindle for myself; but getting one from my brother and sister-in-law as an early Christmas present was pretty awesome. It can contain tons of books for a small, thin and light gadget. It’s easier on the eyes (compared to the iPad) for reading. It’s perfect for a bookworm like me. I’m looking forward to bringing it along with me everywhere in place of thick and bulky paperbacks.

I’ve been wanting to buy leather boots for a while; and I came upon the brand Palladium at The Flat Shop in Glorietta. It’s made of durable, high quality leather. You can wear it two ways. And with the right attitude, you can wear it with almost anything. I love it.

I’ve decided that The Mindy Project is officially my favorite new show this season. It started off as another comedy to pass my time; but I’ve grown to really like it. The humor is quick and witty. Mindy Kaling is hilarious. The many different guest stars are great as well. Hopefully, the show will be allowed to grow an audience so we can witness more workplace craziness in the future.

I watched this when it came out last October. Now, the DVD is out and I can’t get enough of Pitch Perfect. It’s “Glee” in college; but much funnier. Plus, with The Sing-Off canceled, this film gives me my a cappella fix, aside from Pentatonix of course.

Wedding Band is about… Well, a wedding band. This series is simply entertaining and fun… more so as the episodes progress. It’s just a bunch of guys rocking it in different kinds of events (weddings, high school parties, adult proms) and the craziness that ensues. I also love the cover songs they do. Here’s hoping that the comedy continues well into future episodes because I’m really liking it.

Top Ten Book Signing

After over 10 years of listening to Chico & Delamar, I finally found the opportunity to see them in person. I’ve been a silent rusher for a long time; but I wouldn’t dare miss the book signing for The Best of Chico & Delamar’s The Morning Rush Top 10. I’ve enjoyed the book, now I need to get it signed!

It was held at Robinson’s Galleria; and a LOT of people came out to have their copies signed by Chico & Delamar. I arrived a little before 12nn. I passed by the activity center to buy 2 more copies of the book (for my sister), then had lunch. By the time I finished, people have already fallen in line for registration. The crowd just got bigger and bigger from there.

The program before the signing started was short but sweet. Chico & Delamar read excerpts from the book, Chico did his “call center guy” and “Jackie Tiyanak” impressions; then they shared the stage briefly with DJs Cerah and Gino.

Afterwards, it was down to business. Chico & Delamar started signing books! I was number 135. I didn’t mind the wait. The encounter and the signing all went by so fast; but I’m glad I went.  Also, even though the venue was pretty far from my house, the trip was worth it. Thanks Chico & Delamar! Here’s to more books and a lot more listeners.

got my book signed! got my picture taken! mission accomplished.

If you missed your chance this time, Chico & Delamar will have another book signing next week, February 4, 2012 at National Bookstore Trinoma. Registration starts at 11am. Signing starts at 12nn.

And if you haven’t bought the book, I highly encourage that you do. It’s super sulit. It’s funny and entertaining… definitely a great read!

the IT list #6
My first “IT list” for 2012. So let’s get on it, shall we?

I’ve nearly forgotten my account on this site; but it was only in the past few days that I’ve discovered how awesome Pinterest is! This is a quickly growing social networking site, with new users joining everyday. What makes this site different is it simply arranges all your favorite things in a corkboard-like fashion. All you have to do is “pin” them there. Other than the usual favorite shows, artists, movies, books, etc, you can discover great styles, delicious recipes, insightful quotes and helpful how-to’s from all users. If you like what you see, just “pin” and “repin” away. It’s a great, fuss-free way to showcase everything you like and share it with the world.

Feel free to follow me at

I’ve traveled to a number of places here in the country; and while I haven’t had the opportunity to go around the world (only been to 3 countries abroad), I do believe the slogan holds true. Despite the controversy surrounding the “originality” of “It’s More Fun in the Philippines,” (Personally, I don’t really care… It’s a non-issue.) we’re all seeing how much the Internet community has embraced the campaign in a plethora of ways: serious, funny, witty, sarcastic… All very effective. All very Pinoy (Filipino).

While inspiration hasn’t hit me much to come up with my own, I’m really amused with everything that’s being shared online. Here are some sources to see what everyone else have been posting: 1 | 2 | Roland Benzon | It’s More Fun in the Philippines (Official)

I recently put up a new site made of content exclusively created and edited from my iPhone. This app helps make over 90% of it possible. I use it almost everyday. Snapseed is absolutely amazing. It’s one of the best complements to the beautiful camera of the iPhone 4S. It allows me to go beyond just “tweaking” photos. It lets me create great photographs from so-so snapshots. From cropping to color correction, from vintage to dramatic styles, this app makes me one snap happy iPhone owner.

I recently had a Homeland marathon. This show made it to a number of “Top 10 TV Shows” lists, and I would have to agree.

I was only able to watch the first four episodes back in 2011; but it was just last week that I went ahead and finished the first season. What a great show. The story is compelling. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, guessing who’s telling the truth and who’s on which side. The story answers enough questions as it goes along; but it never fails to give you new ones to keep you thinking and coming back for more. Best of all, the acting is superb. Damien Lewis, Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin are impressive in their roles; and I’m hoping they get recognized in the upcoming awards season. Definitely one of my favorite new shows.

(aka The Morning Rush Top 10 Book) I’ve been listening to the dynamic duo of Chico & Delamar since I was in grade school. I followed them whichever station they went to. That’s almost fifteen years of being a fan, though I’m more of a silent Rusher. The Morning Rush Top 10 has been a part of their radio show for a number of those years; and I’ve listened to A LOT of them (most especially lately… in large part due to the podcasts).

When I heard that the book had finally come out, I grabbed a copy that first weekend of release. I devoured it in less than a day. I still reread my favorite parts every now and then. Anyway, I LOVE this book. The funny, witty contributions of the loyal Rushers really shine through. I love the humor. I love the topics. I appreciate the thought that went into this compilation. And it’s only Php175.00! It’s simply one of those wonderful things that you could just grab for a couple of minutes if you need a quick laugh. Highly recommended. Worth every peso.

the IT list #4
I haven’t had the chance to post any list for the month of November; so consider this as a “blanket” countdown for the past 30 days:

This book had a title that I seem to be familiar with but haven’t really heard anything about. Whatever drew me toward it, I’m simply glad to have bought The Perks of Being A Wallflower; because it turned out to be SO GOOD. It’s one of those books that struck me as a genuine coming-of-age story. The protagonist’s narration is in the form of letters to a friend… much like a journal. You are then brought into his world where he’s mainly an observer; but somehow through his friends, family and teachers, he slowly gets pushed in the experience of living. I LOVE it so much, it made me cry. I felt like such a dork for it; but it’s proof how much I got into it. Definitely a must-read.

I went through a documentary phase the past month, where I got hold of as many critically-acclaimed documentaries as possible and watched them one after the other. Some of them may be controversial as to its truth (Catfish); but there wasn’t a film that I didn’t love watching. Some may have simply entertained (My Date With Drew), others made me feel repulsed with its revelations (Food Inc.); but all of them made me learn certain things about the world. I highly recommend taking a break from Hollywood magic and exposing yourself to some real quality stories.

Other documentary films you should check out not listed here: The Wire, The King of Kong, The September Issue.

They just won The Sing-Off; but I’ve been rooting for them since they broke out of the competition with “E.T.”… I think most of us were. Pentatonix is futuristic a cappella in a small package made up of only five people. Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, Kevin and Avi are my new idols. They are fantastic at arranging any song by putting in a signature “surprise” with every performance. It could be a cool breakdown in the middle, a remix with their voices, an abrupt silence… No matter what, what they do is AWESOME. The group remained consistently great with every episode; and I love them for it. I’m so happy they won. I’m looking forward to what their recording contract allows them to produce. I hope it’s as good or even better than their performances on the show.

Just so you get exposed to their talent (if you haven’t already), here’s one of my many favorites, Video Killed the Radio Star:

With the release of the complete film collection on DVD, I was brought back to my love for J.K. Rowling’s beloved series about a young wizard named Harry Potter. I re-watched all 8 films, including special features, in the span of a few days. I was reminded of how special the stories and the films have been not just for me, but for the world. I will forever be a fan.

Brilliant comedic chops paired with a beautiful face? It was quite disorienting but turned out to be even more effective in making me laugh. Petra Mahalimuyak is Ashley Rivera’s alter ego, a fast-talking woman with a terrible “p” and “f” defect, who gives you instructions on how to apply make-up, even how to dougie. Her biggest hit? How to Dance in a Club, which is funny and helpful at the same time.

Shopping Diary #6: Pottermania

I bought these things a few weeks apart; but they do have something in common… They’re both Harry Potter-related!

I’m a bit of a Potterhead; and these two purchases are pretty substantial (read: expensive) but DEFINITELY worth it in my opinion. These are both in my Christmas Wish List; so I’m really happy to have given myself these “gifts.”

Harry Potter: Page to Screen

This book chronicles the complete filmmaking journey that Harry Potter took… from the words written by JK Rowling into a once-in-a-lifetime film franchise. We are guided through the whole process. Learn more about how they chose the screenwriter, director and cast. Find out about character design, production design and special effects that successfully brought everything to life. It’s all there and so much more. It has a lot of wonderful illustrations, pictures and anecdotes that give fans like me insight into the making of all the films. Working in production myself, it’s even more amazing to read and find out about how Hollywood made movie magic happen.

Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection

I have never been this excited to own a complete film collection since the Lord of the Rings set I bought over three years ago. I waited to own this ever since the first film came out in 2001. After ten years, it’s finally out… All the films have been finished and the complete story of Harry Potter has been translated to screen.

This set has 17 discs in all. Each of the 8 films consists of their respective two-disc special editions; and there’s a bonus disc entitled “Hogwarts’ Last Stand,” which is a 35-minute featurette about the making of the final film.

At this price, each disc is approximately Php247, which I think is worth every penny. I was so excited that I decided to re-watch the entire series since purchasing the set. I’m now on the special features of the second film.

I don’t know if a  better sort of collection will be released in the future; but this one’s pretty good enough for me. All the films are packed with special features; and it’s all placed in a neat box. After all, I think ten years has been enough of a wait to have the complete collection in my hands, don’t you think?

I absolutely love this set. Anyway, I’m off to continue my movie marathon… Can’t wait to finish everything!

the IT list #3: Wish List Edition

“the IT list” A series of posts that highlight the various stuff, old or new, that I’ve been doing… reading, watching, eating or simply obsessing over recently. It’s my personal countdown.

the IT list #3
Christmas is just around the corner; and I couldn’t help but dream about (maybe even drool over) what to buy myself this coming holidays. I may or may not get hold of these items by the end of the year; but there’s a strong possibility I’ll own them eventually.

Pentax Q (Pentax Imaging). This is the smallest camera with interchangeable lens. Plus, it has that vintage look, which I like. I’m not really into Digital SLRs. I prefer specialty cameras that not everyone has. I already have my super zoom camera (Canon SX-1 IS). I also have my trusty waterproof camera (Pentax Optio W90). Now, I’m looking for a compact ultra-wide camera. This is the closest to an SLR that I could imagine without the bulky size. However, it retails at a whopping Php39,990 from Camera Haus and Php34,000 from DBGadgets; so obviously I’d have to wait some more before purchasing this. It’s just way too expensive at the moment.

Harry Potter 8-Film Collection. Ever since the first movie came out, I stopped myself from buying the special releases of the Harry Potter films. It was pretty evident that once the series is finished, a boxed set containing the complete collection of films would be released. I’m just waiting for the perfect boxed set at the perfect time. I’m looking for something packed with bonus features, extended scenes and bonus items remembering the movies. The one on (pictured above) is pretty close to perfect. Only time will tell when that ultimate boxed set will be released.

Swatch Touch (Swatch). People may be split on the design; but I like it. As the name implies, this watch features a touchscreen LCD that you just need to swipe and tap in order to access its many features including alarm and timer. Plus, it could keep track of up to two timezones. I read that this one retails for Php6,000++ Hmmm…

Harry Potter: Page to Screen (Fully Booked). Yes, this is another thing Harry Potter-related. Please cut me some slack. The film series just ended this year. Anyway, I like coffee table books; but I only buy the ones covering subjects I’m interested in… such as Friends or the milk mustache campaign. For me, this is the ultimate keepsake that covers the art and filmmaking behind the wonderful Harry Potter film franchise. At over 500 pages, I will no doubt get a lot of insight regarding the books and the movies. I need to get my hands on this.

a good pocket wi-fi. I’ve been wanting to buy one ever since Smart Bro made it available. Last I heard, it retails for Php5,000 for the prepaid version. I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I hope by next year, I could stumble upon the perfect pocket wi-fi brand with good service at a good price.

Shopping Diary #4

With nothing to do at home, I watched What’s Your Number? at Robinson’s Place Manila and did some shopping on the side.

The Sims 3 Pets Limited Edition

This Sims 3 Pets expansion pack has just been released and I can’t wait to take care of my own pet in the game. I want a pony!

black jacket/blazer
Php622.50 (50% off from Php1,245)

This is under Missy by Bayo. I’m happy to have finally found a good, comfortable blazer that could easily go with most of my tops to achieve an instant smart casual look. Most importantly, it was on sale at half off! It might not have been the ideal color; because I already have a black blazer from Freeway. But this one is looser and longer with a different style.

Femme Fatale Deluxe Edition

I love Britney’s latest album Femme Fatale. However, I held off on buying a physical copy mainly because of the packaging. I’m not a fan of slim CD covers made of cardboard. I saw this deluxe edition in the record store and checked the track listing… There are 4 new songs! That was reason enough to go and buy it.

Seriously… I’m Kidding by Ellen Degeneres

I love Ellen Degeneres! I read one of her early books (My Point… And I Do Have One) and loved it. I just love her humor; and I like how her train of thought goes into so many different directions. It’s crazy! I’m hoping this book has more of that. It will be a quick read for sure.
